Workshop Highlights:

1. Introduction to Hive Frame Anatomy:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of hive frames, exploring their structure, purpose, and the role they play in honey production.

2. Timing is Everything:

  • Learn the art of choosing the perfect moment to harvest honey. Understand the signs that indicate when frames are ready for extraction, ensuring the highest quality honey.

3. Frame Pulling Techniques:

  • Get hands-on experience as you master the delicate art of pulling frames from beehives. Our expert beekeeper will guide you through the process, emphasizing gentle practices to maintain hive harmony.

4. Honey Extraction Equipment Overview:

  • Explore the tools of the trade! From uncapping knives to honey extractors, discover the essential equipment needed for a successful honey extraction.

5. Uncapping and Extracting Honey:

  • Roll up your sleeves and dive into the extraction process. Learn how to uncap honeycomb cells and use an extractor to release the liquid gold within. This interactive session will leave you with the skills to extract honey confidently.

6. Filtering and Bottling:

  • Discover the final steps in the honey extraction journey. Learn how to filter honey for purity and clarity, and gain insights into proper bottling techniques to present your honey in its finest form.

7. Tasting Session:

  • Indulge your taste buds in a honey-tasting session! Explore the diverse flavours and aromas produced by different flowers and regions, and gain an appreciation for the unique qualities of your harvested honey.
     

Prerequisites:

  • Participants should have a basic understanding of beekeeping fundamentals acquired in the first Early Dawn Workshop.

  • Enthusiasm, curiosity, and a love for nature!

  • Bee suits will be supplied or bring your own

  • Notebook and pen for taking notes

  • Bring a lunch and a water bottle

  • We will have both classroom and outdoor time

  • Please wear a ball cap, long pants, and closed-toed shoes

Note: Participants are encouraged to bring their beekeeping attire, as there will be hands-on activities involving live bees. Protective gear will be available for those who need it.
